Practical guide

What this pdf metadata editor tool is for

View and edit a PDF document’s title, author and subject, then download a new ordinary PDF copy. This does not convert to PDF/A.

Best for: Correcting missing or inaccurate descriptive metadata in an ordinary PDF before sharing a copy.

How it works in practice

The browser reads the existing title, author and subject fields. You can edit them before the PDF is re-saved. The page contents do not become searchable or accessible merely because metadata changed, and digital signatures can be invalidated by re-saving.

Example: A report exported with a generic title such as “Document” can be given a descriptive title and the correct author. Open the downloaded file’s Properties panel to confirm those fields. For a PDF/A requirement, use a dedicated converter and validator.

Before you use it

  • The output is a standard PDF, not PDF/A.
  • Re-saving a cryptographically signed PDF can invalidate its signature.
  • Title, author and subject are descriptive metadata, not proof of authorship or a security control.

Tips for a better result

  1. Check existing values after upload before changing them.
  2. Keep the original file and compare page count after download.
  3. Open the output in a PDF viewer and confirm the title, author and subject in Properties.
Privacy note: Core file/text transformations are designed to run in your browser. The page can still load normal website resources and third-party libraries/models. See our Privacy Policy and tool testing notes for details.

Implementation description

How this specific tool processes your input

Uses pdf-lib to read the existing title, author and subject, applies the values you enter and re-saves an ordinary PDF. It does not create PDF/A and can invalidate digital signatures.

Verification checklist

  • Open the output in a PDF viewer and compare title, author and subject in Properties.
  • Check page count and whether any existing digital signature still verifies.

Use another method when…

Use a specialist PDF editor for signed files, archival-conformance conversion, or advanced metadata such as XMP profiles.

This section describes the implementation shipped with My Tools HQ. Verify important outputs before relying on them.

Questions about PDF Metadata Editor

/ useful answers
Does this create a PDF/A file?

No. PDF/A requires constraints and validation beyond changing metadata.

Will the title appear on every page?

No. It is document metadata shown by some viewers in a Properties panel; visible page text is unchanged.

Can I use this on a signed PDF?

Avoid re-saving digitally signed PDFs because a rewrite can invalidate cryptographic signatures.
