Practical guide

What this merge pdf tool is for

Join several PDF files into one document without changing the page content, useful when separate files need to become one submission or archive.

Best for: Combining statements, application documents, invoices, chapters or scanned sections into a single ordered PDF.

How it works in practice

Merging copies pages from each source PDF into a new PDF. The important decision is page order: the tool cannot know whether “document 2” belongs before or after “document 1.”

Example: Combine a cover letter, résumé and portfolio excerpt into one PDF in the exact order requested by an application portal.

Before you use it

  • Merging does not reduce file size by itself.
  • Existing bookmarks, forms or advanced document-level features may not survive exactly as authored.
  • Password-protected PDFs may need to be unlocked first.

Tips for a better result

  1. Rename files with numbers such as 01-cover, 02-resume before merging large batches.
  2. Preview the first and last page of each source file so accidental duplicates are easier to catch.
  3. Compress only after merging if the combined file exceeds an upload limit.
Privacy note: Core file/text transformations are designed to run in your browser. The page can still load normal website resources and third-party libraries/models. See our Privacy Policy and tool testing notes for details.

Implementation description

How this specific tool processes your input

Loads each selected PDF with pdf-lib, copies all pages in file order into a new PDF, and downloads the combined document. No page content is interpreted or rewritten beyond the PDF library save step.

Verification checklist

  • Confirm file order before merging.
  • Open the merged PDF and verify first/last pages and total page count.

Use another method when…

Use specialist software for encrypted, digitally signed or malformed PDFs that cannot be loaded safely in-browser.

This section describes the implementation shipped with My Tools HQ. Verify important outputs before relying on them.

Questions about Merge PDF

/ useful answers
Does merging change the quality of my pages?

Page content is copied into a new PDF rather than intentionally rasterized, so ordinary pages should retain their source quality.

Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?

Yes. A single PDF can contain pages with different dimensions, though the visual result may look inconsistent.

Should I compress before or after merging?

Usually merge first, check the document, then compress the final file if you need to hit a size limit.
