Base64 Encode/Decode

Encode or decode Base64 text, unicode-safe.

Practical guide

What this base64 encode/decode tool is for

Encode text into Base64 or decode Base64 back to text using Unicode-safe browser handling.

Best for: Inspecting API payload fragments, data URIs, small configuration values and learning how Base64 representation works.

How it works in practice

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone who has the encoded text can decode it. Encoding increases size by roughly one third because binary data is represented using a restricted character alphabet.

Example: “Hello” becomes a Base64 string that looks less readable, but it contains no secrecy. It is appropriate for transport constraints, not password protection.

Before you use it

  • Base64 does not provide confidentiality or integrity.
  • Malformed input may fail to decode.
  • Large binary files are inefficient to copy around as Base64 text.

Tips for a better result

  1. Never treat Base64 as a security control.
  2. When decoding unknown data, understand what you expect before opening or executing anything.
  3. Use encryption for secrecy and cryptographic hashes/MACs for integrity-related use cases.

/ what this browser tool actually does
Implementation description

How this specific tool processes your input

Uses TextEncoder/TextDecoder plus the browser Base64 functions to safely handle Unicode text. Base64 changes representation only; it provides no confidentiality.

Verification checklist

  • Decode a sample to verify a round trip.
  • Confirm whether the destination expects raw Base64 or a data-URL prefix.

Use another method when…

Use encryption when the goal is secrecy, and hashing when the goal is an integrity fingerprint.

This section describes the implementation shipped with My Tools HQ. Verify important outputs before relying on them.

Questions about Base64 Encode/Decode

/ useful answers
Is Base64 encryption?

No. It is a reversible representation scheme with no secret key.

Why does Base64 get longer?

It represents 3 bytes of input using 4 printable characters, plus possible padding.

Why do some strings end with = signs?

Padding characters can be used so the encoded length aligns with Base64’s 4-character groups.
