JSON Formatter

Validate and pretty-print JSON.

Practical guide

What this json formatter tool is for

Validate JSON syntax and reformat valid data into readable indentation for debugging, configuration review and API work.

Best for: API responses, configuration snippets and copied JSON that is difficult to read on one line.

How it works in practice

JSON has strict syntax: property names use double quotes, commas separate items, and comments are not part of standard JSON. Pretty-printing changes whitespace, not the underlying data.

Example: {"name":"Ana","active":true} can be expanded over several lines without changing its values. {name:"Ana"} is JavaScript-like but invalid JSON because the key is not quoted.

Before you use it

  • Formatting cannot guess the intended structure of badly corrupted data.
  • JSON does not support comments, trailing commas or undefined values.
  • Very large payloads can consume substantial browser memory.

Tips for a better result

  1. Read the first reported syntax location, fix it, then validate again; one missing bracket can cause many downstream errors.
  2. Do not paste secrets or tokens into tools unless you are comfortable with the processing model.
  3. Use a schema validator separately when you need to check data types or required fields, not just syntax.
Privacy note: Core file/text transformations are designed to run in your browser. The page can still load normal website resources and third-party libraries/models. See our Privacy Policy and tool testing notes for details.

/ what this browser tool actually does
Implementation description

How this specific tool processes your input

Uses the browser’s native JSON.parse and JSON.stringify functions. Valid JSON is parsed into a data structure and then serialized with indentation; invalid syntax returns the parser error.

Verification checklist

  • Validate that strings, numbers and booleans still have the expected types.
  • Remember that object key order should not be used as application logic.

Use another method when…

Use a schema validator when you need to check required fields, data types or business rules beyond syntax.

This section describes the implementation shipped with My Tools HQ. Verify important outputs before relying on them.

Questions about JSON Formatter

/ useful answers
What is the difference between valid JSON and pretty JSON?

Validity is about syntax. Pretty-printing only adds indentation and line breaks to valid data.

Why are comments rejected?

Standard JSON does not include a comment syntax, even though some configuration formats extend JSON with comments.

Does formatting change my values?

It should only change whitespace and presentation, not the parsed data values.
